From Rich Coast to Savannah – A Country Lad in Latin America

The breathtaking view of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica from the bow of a cruiseship, though short and sweet, was the inspiration for me to see more of Latin America. From the exotic jungles of the Rich Coast, the saturating experience of the last throes of El-Nino, seeing the efforts to save the Scarlet Macaw, I became hooked. Following the endangered Scarlet Macaw, I visited Peru and the largest Maclaw clay lick in South America, together with the Sacred Valley and Machu Pichuu it was a revelation. From jungles to the vast plains of Venezuela, the grass lands and flood plains were an exciting finale to a journey that took me several years. Who couldn’t marvel at natures wonders in the form of spectacular sunsets bathing the wetlands blood-red. Wetlands that are home to the Capy Bara, Orinco Crocodile, thousands of water birds, and the largest snake in the world, the Anaconda. Duration 1 hour 47 minutes.

A Country Lad in the South Atlantic

For many years I longed to visit the Falklands, and in 1999 I did so for the first time. The wildlife of these exceptionally beautiful islands is unique. The King Penguin and Rock Hopper are amongst five breeding Penguins. The Falklands also host eighty percent of the world’s Black Browed Albatross, and share my joy and good fortune when I filmed the largest rookery of Gentoo Penguins in the South Atlantic, over 20,000 birds including the fluffy youngsters. What a spectacle. A Country Lad in the South Atlantic: Duration 1 hour 32 minutes.

A Beautiful and Fragile World – A Country Lad Returns

And in my follow-up, ‘A Country Lad Returns’, see the devastation to that same spectacular rookery caused by poisonous algae blooms and the sadness I felt knowing I possibly would never see again the Gentoos ‘coming home’ in the same way I had done the previous year. The Falklands are unique. I am now a regular visitor. The reason is obvious. I promised myself that I would return to see what recovery, if any, was taking place. On my return visit in December 2006 I was delighted to record a good recovery. I have added this material as an appendage to A Country Lad Returns. A Beautiful and Fragile World – A Country Lad Returns: Duration 61 minutes.
